Sandy Stream Pond
Baxter State Park
Northern Maine

We got up at 2:30 this morning to drive two hours north to the park to spend the morning with the moose.  This is Sandy Stream Pond just after sunrise.  It was still a little dark for good photos.  When we got to the pond we'd missed one large bull but others were still in the woods.

A cow moose on the boardwalk, walking too close for comfort.  There's a calf 20' behind her.  I backed off quickly and used the zoom lens.  The moose at Sandy Stream Pond are used to people.  This doesn't make them tame or safe.  They weigh up to 1,200 lbs.  Notice how sharp those hooves are.  This cow has a calf.   She wasn't at all nervous.  If she had been she'd have had her ears back, would have been grunting at me, and wouldn't have walked faster.  She was calm.  I was nervous!

I started wondering if I should climb up the ledge or jump in the pond.  Thankfully he got all the minerals he wanted off the ledge and walked away.
